Do you need to understand the environmental impacts of artificial intelligence, and what can be done to manage the harms?
In this one-hour online briefing, Chris Adams and Katrin Fritsch from Green Web Foundation describe the key environmental issues of AI to people with little time in their diaries and a need to make better informed decisions. They will:
- Provide a high-level overview of the key issues related to the environmental impacts of AI including air pollution, water usage, and rare earth minerals.
- Highlight key existing and upcoming regulatory drivers in Europe and beyond to better navigate the policy landscape.
- Give you the most important numbers on carbon emissions of AI you need to know now to understand current risks.
- Introduce you to the Consumption-Intensity-Direction model to think about the environmental impacts of AI more holistically.
There will also be time for drilling into your specific questions and an opportunity to meet others on a similar journey.
Who is this briefing for?
This concise session is for strategists, CEOs, sustainability and policy leads, as well as CTOs and other decision makers grappling with using AI in an environmentally responsible way.
How does it work?
We run this session on Zoom with a maximum of eighteen participants consisting of:
- A teaching session delivered by our expert, Chris Adams, on the environmental impacts of AI, key regulatory drivers, the most important numbers on carbon emissions, and the C-I-D model.
- A facilitated conversation to dive deeper and ask specific questions.
We offer a certificate of attendance to participants, and provide slides and other materials afterwards. We encourage you to be fully present, distraction free and participate openly to ensure you get the most out of this learning opportunity.
What does this briefing not cover?
This briefing does not look at the wider issues associated with artificial intelligence, such as ethics, bias or privacy. We also do not explore artificial intelligence as a climate solution.
Why Green Web Foundation?
We are a non-profit organisation that has been working on digital sustainability for a decade. We are able to provide a critical and well-researched overview of the topic that is not only focused on opportunities of AI, but sheds light on it in a more substansive way. We have also worked publicly on AI and its environmental impacts:
- Our 2024 report on the environmental impacts of AI.
- In 2025, we co-wrote Within Bounds, a statement to limit AI’s environmental impact that has been signed by more than 130 civil society organisations.
- We have experience working with industry bodies on digital sustainability, for example W3C, IEEE, and Green Software Foundation.
- Our in-house technical team develops open source code to move the internet off of fossil fuels, and we understand the nuances in the approaches.
- We frequently participate in podcasts, panels, and speak at events about artificial intelligence and its environmental impacts.
