At the Green Web Foundation we are committed to ensuring that the hosting and data center infrastructure we use will be powered by 100% fossil free energy every hour by 2030. This means that any data centers we operate ourselves, or any hosting infrastructure we might purchase from another provider operates using 100% fossil free energy, and this generation is supported by credible claims based on the Green Web Foundation’s provider verification criteria.
We understand that achieving this will take time, and may require us to look carefully at the hosting infrastructure we use. Therefore, as part of this commitment, we are publishing information about the fossil free status of our current digital supply chain.
We are signatories of the UN global 24 / 7 compact.

Appendix
We have published a detailed breakdown of our targets and current progress below.
Background
We think about the disclosure of digital decarbonisation as a three tiered system:
- Tier 0: A supplier is not making any disclosures about using carbon-free energy. They are not actively buying clean energy to decarbonise their operations.
- Tier 1: A supplier makes annually matched disclosures about buying carbon-free energy. They may be 100% annually matched, but generally, there are still hours in the year where the infrastructure ends up running on electricity from fossil fuels, without matching clean generation. We cannot achieve 100% carbon-free energy use in this way.
- Tier 2: A supplier makes hourly matched disclosures about buying carbon-free energy, usually using a combination of different clean energy technologies, to avoid relying on fossil generation. We can reach 100% carbon-free energy use in this way.
We use these tiers below to frame the information we have about our own hosting infrastructure and what we purchase from suppliers.
Hosting infrastructure we operate
None.
Hosting infrastructure/services we purchase
Across all our suppliers, we have three (3) who make annually matched claims for fossil-free energy use, and one (1) supplier who’s disclosures point to hourly matched disclosures.
| Region | Disclosure tier | Fossil-free energy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | Finland | Tier 1 | 95% |
| 34SP | England | Tier 2 | 78% |
| Scaleway | Netherlands | Tier 1 | 58% |
| Cloudflare | Global | Tier 1 | 45% |
| Overall Score | 67% |
